Philadelphia: Little Left
Nothing is left. Hardly a trace of Christianity is evidenced in modern Alaşehir, or ancient Philadelphia. A few bases to the Byzantine Basilica of Saint John of the seventh century AD remain. Such a silence of Christian witness eerily evokes Jesus’s warning about the “hour of trial” that features in the letter to the church at Philadelphia in Rev 3:7–13.
